A good pension is the goal
Increasingly more people consider society and the environment when making financial choices. Nationale Nederlanden also considers sustainability criteria when investing your pension contributions and premiums. We preferably invest in companies that take their role in society seriously and consider their surroundings. That is why so-called ESG criteria are applied in all our investment decisions.
NN Investment Partners (NN IP)* is responsible for the investments in your pension scheme. When investing, our investment experts also check how a company takes account of the environment (Environmental) and whether it pursues a social policy (Social), for example on human rights and working conditions. We also check how a company is managed and how it conducts itself in the course of business (Governance). We exclude certain sectors and companies, for example those involved in controversial issues such as arms (for example cluster bombs and landmines).
Impact on business performance
A focus on sustainability often affects business performance in the longer run. The most sustainable companies are not automatically the best performers. But research does show that companies that care little about aspects such as environmental legislation or employee rights generate lower returns and run higher risks in the long run. For example a mining company that pays too little attention to safety and suffers a major accident. Conversely, climate change is increasing the need to transition to solar and wind power generation, which creates opportunities for companies that are well equipped to respond to this development.
Exerting influence
Where possible, we also use our voting rights as a shareholder, in order to drive sustainable change or to call boards to account on non-sustainable conduct and activities. That way, we can initiate positive change at companies. It is one of the ways we manage your pension responsibly and contribute to a more sustainable economy and a better world.

In our own operations, we strive to reduce our environmental impact and be a good corporate citizen.
Carbon neutral
We are now carbon neutral thanks to our implementation of sustainability measures at our office buildings and our offsetting of emissions through investment in sustainable projects (in Turkey, for example). In addition, Nationale Nederlanden employees have an annual public transport pass and are encouraged to drive electric company cars.
Socially engaged
We are also committed to social charities, including the LINDA.foundation and Stichting Jarige Job. Also, employees help out by reading books to children at primary schools in Rotterdam and The Hague or by giving job application training.
