Go digital too and contribute to a greener future

Trees for All will plant a tree as a thank-you gift

Do you care about nature? And would you like to help us plant new forest? This is now easier than ever. All you need to do is activate your mijn.nn account. This way you will always have an up-to-date overview of your pension and can manage your pension affairs effortlessly. As a reward, Trees for All, partner of Nationale-Nederlanden Pensioen, will plant a tree. Danielle Lagemann and Rik Roskam will tell you all about this special partnership.

Making a positive contribution to the future of our planet: that’s what we all want. If you accrue a pension with Nationale-Nederlanden, we will work on that together with you. If you now activate your personal online environment mijn.nn Inkomen Later, we will offer something in return. For every five new accounts, Trees for All, partner of Nationale-Nederlanden, will plant a new tree. The aim is to have a grand total of 9,000 trees planted in the coming months. And that is as much as two hectares – or four football fields – of new forest.

Sustainability is important to Nationale-Nederlanden. “This has been high on our company’s agenda for years”, says Danielle Lagemann. “We also pay attention to the environmental impact in our investment strategy.

Benefits of managing your pension online

Danielle is a project leader in Nationale-Nederlanden’s ‘Good Employer Practices’ programme. She has been helping scheme members get started with their pensions for two years. “If you accrue a pension with us, it is important to know where you stand with your pension. In your online environment, you will find all relevant information regarding your pension. Do you need additional documents? Or would you like to get details on your partner’s pension or occupational disability pension? You will find it in the portal in no time.”

Danielle wants to encourage everyone to handle their pensions online from now on. “Managing your pension online has many benefits. You always have an up-to-date overview of your future income. And you can manage your pension affairs more easily. Moreover, we use much less paper as a result. So why not do it?”

Retirement is a far way off

So why is it that almost half of scheme members at present are hesitant to switch from paper to digital? “That’s because retirement still seems a far way off for most of us”, Danielle explains. “We trust that everything for later is well taken care of. That’s why quite a lot of people don’t bother to activate their accounts.”

Will you also contribute to new forest?

We reward the first 45,000 new mijn.nn accounts by planting a total of 9,000 trees through the Trees for All foundation. Will you join us? Create your account now!

These members will receive a letter a few times a year instead of a message by email. Nationale-Nederlanden finds it important to inform everyone regularly and therefore sends an annual statement. But research shows that those letters are often barely looked at and so disappear into a drawer.

Danielle cannot stress enough the importance of regularly checking the current status of your pension. “The younger you start, the easier it is to adjust your pension. You will benefit greatly from that later. Pension used to be about 70% of your salary, but that is no longer true for most people. You can supplement your pension by periodically making some investments or putting small amounts of your monthly salary in tax-exempt savings.”

Saving paper

Besides the convenience and overview of managing your pension online, switching to digital also has other benefits. For a start, it provides assurance that messages reach you on time. Danielle: “Suppose, for example, that you have to make a decision regarding your pension. Then it is annoying if the letter is sent to an old address. If you use your private email address, you can be sure that the message will arrive properly and on time even after moving home.”

Moreover, you help reduce paper consumption. “We have calculated that we need 445 kilos of paper per year to send the pension messages”, Danielle says. And the paper’s carbon footprint does not stop there. “We are dealing with a whole chain: the printing company, transport, postal delivery. The footprint is much wider than the one piece of paper!”

With the tree-planting campaign, we hope to make the switch to digital more attractive. “Isn’t it nice to think that because of your choice, we are planting a tree somewhere? And that you are contributing to a better climate that way?”

Fewer stamps

Danielle admits that the transition to digital also brings savings for Nationale-Nederlanden. “Just think about the stamps. If you receive letters from us a few times a year, and for years on end, it adds up. It also saves us time, which we can use instead to improve our services to you as scheme member.”

All in all, plenty of reasons for members to use mijn.nn. Do you already have a mijn.nn account and feel drawn to the aims of Trees for All? You can use the Trees for All website to contribute to the planting of trees for a small fee, or give someone a tree as a gift. Nature will thank you for it!

About Trees for All

What does Trees for All do?
“Trees for All has a very clear objective”, says Rik Roskam, account manager of the Utrecht-based foundation. “And that is: contributing to a green and healthy world. We plant forests in the Netherlands and other countries for a better climate, more biodiversity and healthier living conditions. Together with Nationale-Nederlanden and our other partners, we are committed to adding more forest to the world.”

In 2021, Trees for All* planted more than one million trees. A record in the history of the charity, which was founded in 1999. Trees for All staff are not personally involved in the planting of trees on a daily basis. “We always seek to work together with local partners, at home and abroad. We also strictly monitor that the projects we select demonstrably contribute to nature restoration and expansion. And abroad, we also consider the impact on the local economy. This way, we helped over 7,000 farmers abroad find work and income in 2021.”

Companies and organisations often use the trees for campaigns for their own employees or customers. Just like Nationale-Nederlanden, which wants to encourage members to manage their pensions online. “We welcome initiatives like that”, says Rik. “Because these initiatives are also good for our visibility. And most importantly, it produces more trees!”
